Nelson Alvarez

Nelson Alvarez was born in Havana in 1966.  He immigrated from Cuba in 1996, and he established himself in New York City in 2003. He is a full time artist, art educator and curator. Nelson’s studio is located in Woodlawn Heights, a vibrant artist Community in The Bronx, NY. His works have been exhibited nationwide and still have an important presence in the Tristate area.  He has a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from Kean University (“Cum Laude”) and earned his MFA in painting at Lehman College, CUNY in New York.

Mr. Alvarez’s work depicts the impact of rampant industrialization upon urban-landscapes. The images render and expose post-industrial ecological blight; as well as examine and focus on growing "post-manufacturing" environmental problems. Throughout his multimedia fusion approach to art making (which includes painting, drawing, photography, and optical installation), the paradoxical and contradictory coexistence of nature with industry (and industry with nature) is the primary-theme and focal aesthetic-concentration. Nelson interest in creates artwork from an ecological and environmental perspective results from his early environmental and social-activism in his native Cuba.

Nelson works actively as member of The Neo- Latino group, The We Are You international Project, Artists Unite, New York; Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NOMAA); Union City Artist Collective; Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, in Brooklyn, and YoHo Artist Collective, Yonkers, NY.  Mr. Alvarez also has served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Brooklyn Waterfront Artist Coalition and was part of the advisory committee for the BX Arts Factory, a Bronx base organization.

Nelson has received many awards including a Certificate of Appreciation by the Union City Board of Commissioners; State of New Jersey Senate Citation; and First Place at the 40th Plainfield Art Festival in Plainfield, NJ. Alvarez also has been teaching art in the Newark Public School System for the last 8 years.
